The beauty of plein air painting for me, aside from the obvious delight of simply being outdoors and observing nature, is communicating my own sense of feeling about a particular place by painting the light of a given moment in time. It is during those moments of intense focus, while painting and contemplating the ever-changing effects of light from life, that I connect with an energy that comes from within. I am always keeping an eye out for interesting patterns and contrasts in shapes, values and colors. Even when not painting, I find my mind is constantly calculating how I’d mix a certain hue or crop a given scene to best lead the eye through space. I am driven by a desire to share the beauty I experience in my surroundings with others, to snatch a moment of changing light and reveal that fragment of time through the medium of oil paint. If my paintings elicit an emotional response from the viewer then I have done my job as an artist.
